North Korea: A Comprehensive Overview
Official Name and Geography
North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a country located in East Asia. It occupies the northern half of the Korean Peninsula and borders China to the north, Russia to the northeast, and South Korea to the south.
Foundation and Division
North Korea was established in 1948 after World War II, when the United States and the Soviet Union divided Korea into two occupation zones. The United States occupied the southern half, while the Soviet Union occupied the northern half. The division of Korea led to the Korean War, which lasted from 1950 to 1953.
