Arkansas Governor Declares State of Emergency Ahead of 2024 Solar Eclipse

Authorities Prepare for Influx of Tourists

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has announced a state of emergency in Arkansas ahead of the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse.

In a press release, Governor Sanders said she has released funds for additional law enforcement, traffic control, and infrastructure improvements. The eclipse is expected to draw millions of visitors to the state, and officials are working to ensure their safety and enjoyment.

Arkansas State Police Colonel Bill Bryant said the agency is planning to deploy hundreds of troopers to assist with traffic control and security. In addition, the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) is working with local governments to improve roads and bridges that may be heavily traveled during the eclipse.

The eclipse will be visible in its totality for about two minutes in Arkansas. The path of totality will cross the state from southwest to northeast, beginning in Hamburg and ending in Paragould. The last time a total solar eclipse crossed Arkansas was in 2017.

Governor Sanders encouraged Arkansans and visitors alike to take advantage of this rare astronomical event. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the beauty and wonder of a total solar eclipse," she said. "We welcome visitors from all over the world to come to Arkansas and share this special moment with us."

The state of emergency will allow Arkansas to draw down federal funds and resources to help with eclipse preparations. The ARDOT is also working with the National Eclipse Coalition to provide information and resources to visitors.

With just over a month to go, preparations are in full swing for the 2024 solar eclipse. Arkansas is expected to be one of the most popular destinations in the US for viewing the eclipse, and officials are working to ensure that visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience.
