GEORGE REEVES, OF "SUPERMAN" SERIES, DIES

Body of Actor, 45, Found in Bedroom,

BULLET WOUND IN HEAD; POLICE LIST CASE AS SUICIDE

LOS ANGELES, THURSDAY JUNE 16 (AP) - George Reeves, 45-year-old actor who played Superman in the television series, was found dead today in his home, an apparent suicide. A bullet wound in the head was found by Deputy Coroner Thomas Noguchi. A .38-caliber revolver was found on the floor beside the bed.

Reeves was found by his fiancee, Leonore Lemmon, when she returned home from a television show rehearsal.

The actor had told friends recently that he was depressed and was worried about the end of the "Superman" series. The current run-off period of the show's five year contract with the National Broadcasting Co. will end on September 20.

Reeves began his career as a contract star with Warner Bros. in 1939. He appeared in more than 60 films, many of them westerns.

In 1951 he got the role of Superman in "Adventures of Superman" series, which originated on ABC and later moved to NBC. He was a rare combination of an actor who looked the role and had the voice for it. For five years he made personal appearances dressed as Superman at benefits for crippled children, hospitals and orphanages.

The death of George Reeves who personified the invincible "Man of Steel," has a bitter twist of irony.
